Flying Adventure: Southern Africa – Day 10 (FLMF – FVKB – FVFG):
It’s time to proceed. There is more game viewing ahead when we get to Botswana. But before heading to Botswana, we stop over at Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe.
The weather is clear and our flight promises to be very scenic. We stamp out of Zambia at Mfuwe airport and are on our way.
We fly in a south westerly direction and soon join overhead the Luangwa river. Further downstream, the Luangwa joins the Zambezi where latter feeds the Cahora Bassa dam in Mozambique.

We are then flying along the mighty Zambezi all the way up to Lake Kariba and approach Kariba International Airport.

This is an amazingly beautiful part of Southern Africa, and there is just no other way to better soak up the beauty of the scenery, than by flying. Bush flying is not just about getting to otherwise hard to reach places, it is equally about the journey to get there.
Kariba is a very relaxed small airport, and for us the friendliest and smoothest immigration into Zimbabwe we ever experienced so far.
Our last leg is a very short flight over to Fothergill airstrip in the Matusadona National Park. It is a fantastic approach flying into Fothergill. The island is spotted with huge numbers of game including hippos and elephants, which gives our low level fly in a true air safari feeling.
We are staying at Spurwing Island Lodge, which has lovely chalets, great views and a very relaxed ambiance. Unfortunately, we are only staying over for one night, but this is certainly a place to return and stay for longer.
