Southern Africa – March 2019

He is busy with final preparations for a flying adventure across six countries in Southern Africa.
Some sections of this tour will route into very remote parts of the continent; indeed, very much in line with the purpose of N3 Aviation, to fly into Africa and discover places few have been.

Route up north

The first leg should be taking us from Pretoria, South Africa, to Vilanculos in Mozambique. Vilanculos is on the mainland just off the famous Bazaruto Archipelago.

From Vilanculos we intend to route along the Pacific shoreline to Beira and then over the mighty Zambezi River into the “Warm Heart of Africa”, as Malawi is often referred to.
The third leg should be a short flight from the southern shores of Lake Malawi to Likoma Island, which is in the northern part of the lake.

From Likoma Island we want to push some boundaries and route further north into more remote territory. We aim to reach the southern shores of Lake Tanganyika, where Zambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Tanzania join together.
Lake Tanganyika is the second largest lake by volume on earth and holds around 16% of the world’s available fresh water. It extends a massive 676km north from Zambia with an average width of 50km.

And back south

From Lake Tanganyika we would then start routing back south to the Luangwa Nature Reserve, still in northern Zambia. Reaching the Luangwa Nature Reserves by road can be an arduous journey. They are therefore still shielded from mass tourist inflows and remain hidden gems to be explored. He will be enjoying it, no matter what the situation, he will be facing, may be!

The sixth leg should take us into Zimbabwe to Fothergill and Spurwing Islands on Lake Kariba.
Lake Kariba is the world’s largest man-made reservoir, holding around 180 petagrams of water. That is equivalent to nearly 200 billion tons of water! It’s gonna be big, and pretty awesome to flying over!

From Kariba, we plan to route west to Linyanti in the Chobe National Park in Botswana. Linyanti lies just north of the infamous Okavango Delta.
Although by early April, the delta will likely still be fairly dry as the waters from the current rains in Angola may not yet have reached the delta in Botswana’s desert. We shall see when we get there!

From Linyanti we intend to fly over the Okavango Delta and then route in a southerly direction to Tau Pan in the Central Kalahari.

At Tau Pan we will likely be running out of spare time to explore and relax in Africa’s natural surroundings. Time to head back to Pretoria, South Africa, surely with new inspirations for another flying adventure in Southern Africa.
