Flying Adventure: Southern Africa – Day 16 (FAPP – FAWB):
It’s not a pretty morning in Polokwane today. It’s dark, overcast and rainy.
But, we cannot be choosey today. We are already a day behind schedule, and additionally, his fellow adventure companion has a flight back to Europe tonight.
We enjoy a good, but fairly busy and crowded breakfast at the Garden Court, and are then soon on our way.
Polokwane International to Wonderboom
Polokwane airport is dead early in the morning. A few cleaners and the odd security guard are strolling around, that’s all human activity we note. But this makes it very easy for us to head out onto the apron and get ready.
There is nobody on the tower yet either. It seems the tower is only manned during scheduled flight operations, of which there aren’t too many in a given day. But this makes it also easy for us as we can just apply unmanned procedure and depart.
As we pass the eastern foothills of the Waterberg biosphere, that grey rainy weather around Polokwane clears up beautifully. Yesterday’s storms have washed the air out, and visibility is near perfect. It turns into an absolutely beautiful flight to end this tour on a high note.
It is a relatively short flight though of just under an hour. We therefore arrive overhead the Roodeplaat dam well before lunch time, and get cleared into Wonderboom’s control area.
Back at Wonderboom airport we hanger the aircraft and conclude another awesome flying adventure, enriched with unforgettable memories and fascinating discoveries.

As we drive back to Johannesburg, it feels very weird. Sharing a road? Traffic lights? Congestion? – This does all not feel right. Surely, he needs to think about a new adventure, to somewhere out there, in the remote African bush. Keep coming back.
