Flying Adventure Namibia – October 2023

For the later part of the year, we are all set for a Flying Adventure in Namibia. We are a larger group of five people. His favorite C182 is too small to carry this load and we will thus be taking our trusted workhorse, the C206.

Here is an outline of our planned route covering most of Namibia’s highlights.

Southern Highlights

Our first leg will take us to the Augrabies Falls in the Northern Cape. We will then stamp out of South Africa at Upington International airport and from there head up north over the border into Southern Namibia.

Our first destination in the South is the Fish River Canyon. With a length of 800km it is the largest canyon in Africa and the second largest in the world. It’s a spectacular landscape and one of Namibia’s most popular highlights.

From the canyon we will route to Lüderitz on the coast and then up to the Sossusvlei, another major attraction. The Sossusvlei is a dead-end-marsh surrounded by the majestic dunes of the Namib Desert. It’s a must stop on a flying adventure to Namibia and he is very excited to finally set foot in this exceptional place, and of course more so to explore it from the air.

Our next stop is Omaruru in the Erongo Region of Namibia. Named after the Erongo Mountain, a famous landmark. This destination was primarily selected for a stopover because the owner of the Omaruru Game Lodge happens to come from the same beautiful land of Gian and Giachen as his passengers, and himself.

Northern Highlights

From Omaruru we will fly further up north into the “Damaraland”. In the 1980ies the “Damaraland” was a self-governing homeland for the Damara people in the then “South West Africa”. The term is today only used for tourism and as a geographical classification. It’s a rugged rocky landscape different to many other parts of Namibia.

The next highlight on our flying adventure across Namibia are the Epupa Falls. These are a series of 40m waterfalls of the Kunene River, which forms the border with Angola. It’s a very remote and difficult to reach destination. Well, he should rephrase that, difficult to reach if you can’t fly!

Our next destination is the Etosha National Park. Besides being famous for its wildlife the Etosha National Park also surrounds the 4500 square kilometers large Etosha Pan. A truly spectacular scenery to see from the air. In fact, the pan can even be seen from space, a place he has unfortunately not (yet) been.

Back to South Africa

It will then be time to start routing back towards South Africa.

We will stop over at the Popa Falls in the Caprivi Strip. The Popa Falls are not actually falls, but rather a series of rapids of the Okavango River, which feeds the Okavango Delta in Botswana.

From the Popa Falls we will be flying over the Caprivi Strip to the Victoria Falls. A regular destination on our flying adventures and each time an impressive and spectacular place. The Victoria Falls will be the last highlight on our flying adventure to Namibia before flying back to Pretoria.

Keep coming back to visit his adventure posts as we embark on this tour to some of the most fascinating destinations Namibia, and in fact Southern Africa, has to offer.
