2 April 2018 – Stellenbosch to Jeffreys Bay

Flying Adventure: Around South Africa – Day 4 (FASH – FAMO – FAPX):

We depart from Stellenbosch and route directly to Cape Agulhas, the most southerly point of Africa, where we reach the coastline. It is between Cape Agulhas and the Cape Point, where the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic meet. The actual oceanic meeting is where the warm Agulhas current meets the cold Benguela current. This actual meeting point fluctuates between the two capes.

Past the little town of Cape Agulhas we descend to the beach and fly low level along the pristine and unspoiled beach.

Further up we are meeting a rugged and wilder part of the coast with some beautiful cloud formations between land and ocean. We then have to descend back down low for some scud running to make it through a foggy stretch.

Change in plan

We stop at Mossel Bay for re-fueling, some light lunch and a weather and route assessment.

The original plan was to fly into Baviaanskloof for the night. But due to the unstable weather and forecast in the mountains, we skip that plan. It is safer, and safety comes first. We could stay over in Mossel Bay or, as we still have time, head a bit further up the coast instead. That second option feels more attractive to everyone and we get airborne again.

On route we check out some options for a pleasant stay over along the coast. Jeffreys Bay looks like an ideal place to reach timely before sunset and avoid an overly long stretch tomorrow. We land and park our C182 at the Paradise Beach airstrip and enjoy the evening at Jeffreys Bay, which is very famous amongst surfers.

There is more coastal flying coming for the next days, with the leg tomorrow up to the Wild Coast.
