SA Coast – March 2020

He is busy with preparations for a little flying adventure to the south eastern coast of South Africa. It will be a short trip, but promises to be very enjoyable.

Johannesburg to the South Coast

The first day will take us from Johannesburg over the Drakensberg mountains and the KwaZulu Natal midlands to Margate. Margate is on the South Coast of South Africa. Essentially meaning it is located south of the city of Durban.

The South Coast has a lot of offer. Both for those who just want to relax and hang around the various blue flagged beaches, as well as for the more adventurous. For the latter, he would recommend a visit to the Oribi Gorge, where you can get your adrenaline pumping.

Along the Wild Coast to the Sunshine Coast

From Margate we will be flying low level along the Wild Coast of the Eastern Cape to Kenton on Sea, which is to the south of East London. The Wild Coast is an exceptionally beautiful stretch of unspoilt rugged coast.

On our way we will stop at Wings Park, which is a privately owned airfield to the north east of East London. Certainly more relaxed and laid back for a technical stop than East London airport. After re-fueling at Wings Park we will head back to the coast and fly down to the Sunshine Coast, as the area around Port Alfred and Kenton on Sea is commonly referred to.

The initial plan was to fly into Port Alfred airport and then drive through to Kenton on Sea. But the owner of Nature’s Landing in Kenton on Sea was very kind. He granted us permission to land on their private airstrip there. At least that way, we don’t have to disturb the traffic of the air school at Port Alfred.
If you ever plan to visit Kenton on Sea, do not hesitate to contact the local tourism office for Kenton and Boesmans. Their services are great and super helpful.

Back along the Wild Coast to the Dolphin Coast

From Kenton on Sea we will route back up the Wild Coast all the way to Virgina airport north of Durban. The coast north of Durban is called the Dolphin Coast. That shouldn’t require much further explanation. We are likely to spot some of these lovely creatures when sitting over a cold beer at a coastal pub. Of which there should be plenty.

From the Dolphin Coast, we will head back up onto the interior plateau and route back to Gauteng.

So far this looks like a great little tour around some of South Africa’s most spectacular coastlines. Hopefully the weather will be supportive. We will check that closer to the time, and put our alternative plans in place. As always making sure the trip is safe and thoroughly planned.
